Hehehe....Today i opened the door, and outside was a little package for me...can anybody guess what it was???
WELL I'M GONNA TELL YOU! It was of course my deluxe box set of Brand New Eyes, Paramore's latest album! I cannot even describe to you in mere words the excitement that filled my veins when I opened that package!
So anyway, without dragging on, I wanna tell you guys about the album, my own little review. But before I begin, to ensure you that I am not being bias, as i was listening to the album, i pretended that Miley Cyrus was the singer, that way i would be completely honest with myself if I liked any of the songs.
After my first listen, the songs that really stood out to me were: Careful, Brick by boring brick, The only exception, misguided ghosts and All I wanted. Those are definetly my favourites. Hmmm...that's like half the album! oh well, nevermind.
SO, this album has songs that are quite "poppy", kinda like "That's what you get", and then it has songs more like "decode" that are dark. Then, there are songs that make you see a whole new side of Paramore, acoustics! There is even a love song, but I tell you, this love song is not the sappy kind, yet it makes you cry. It's the kinda song I would want played at my wedding.
At first, some of the songs disappointed me because they were more pop than rock, but what redeemed me was the lyrics. Usually pop songs have lyrics tha make you cringe, but let me tell you, these lyrics are not cringe worthy at all. Paramore have really stepped up, these lyrics are very deep and meaningful, and carry with them a lot of emotion. "Playing God" is a great exmple. Although it is sung in a carefree way, lyrics like "next time you point you point a finger, i might have to bend it back or break it off" are definitly NOT carefree.
"Careful and Brick by Boring Brick" are more of the Decode-sounding songs. Careful is an awesome track, the vocals and music compliment eachother nicely. I feel like "Brick by Boring Brick" was written about me, it's kinda sad how badly I can relate to it.
"ignorance".... we have all heard it, we know what it's about. Weird that they chose this song out of everything else to be thier first single, doesn't really represent the whole new level of awesomeness Paramore has acheived, but it does kinda bridge the gap between Riot and Brand New Eyes.
Some songs make your brain tick to try and figure what they are about, while some songs are straight to the point. "Looking Up" is very straight to the point: they almost gave up being a band, and realise how stupid that would have been. "The only exception" is not that hard to figure out either, she beleives in love again! (this is the love song i was talking about). "Turn it off" and "Feeling Sorry" require more brain work, but once you figure it out, you think, woah.....this is deep. (okay, i kinda read Hayley's lyric journal to help me figure out what those songs are about, but still...)
"Where the lines overlap" is a very fun song. One of those songs that just makes you feel so happy. It sounds like they are singing it live right next to you because you can hear the gasps of breath Hayley has to take before she starts singing the next phrase. Probably a great song to bounce to live.
"All I wanted"....don't really know what category to put this one in....the main thing that stands out is definitly Hayley's AMAZING vocals. Gives me chills just listening to how high she can sing without sounding fake. This song ends Brand New Eyes, not sure why they chose this song to end on, i would have gone for a more happier one, but it does leave you wanting more.
Now, my all time favourite on the album, "Misguided ghosts". At the start of this, you can hear a "one, two, three, four" from Josh, and then it is just the guitar and Hayley the rest of the way. This songs just touched me so much, i totally get what she is going through. "I'm just one of those ghosts that travel endlessly. don't need no roads, infact, they follow me". I guess its just a great song for a teenager, or anyone for that fact, who is still trying to find who they are, and are confused on how to get there. It sucks that this is the shortest song on the album, but in my humble opinion, its the best. Very different from the typical "Paramore" sound, it almost sounds like a song you would expect to hear in Juno.
Overall, this album is probably thier best yet. Let me rephrase that, this album IS thier best yet. The topics that they sing about are much more deep and meaningful, not just about how some girl has a body that ticks like a clock, and you can tell that they have grown a lot as people, and as a band, and they are sharing that wisdom with us. In a way, its good that they went through all those problems as a band, because if they hadn't, Brand New Eyes would have not been the same. If you are expecting another "riot", don't, because you will be disapointed. If you are expecting another "all we know is falling" don't, cause you will be disappointed. If you would like a combination of the two taken to a whole new level to produce a whole new sound from Paramore, than get out there and get this album. Really, because of the diversity found in this album, there is guaranteed to be a song that you like.
Lyrics: 5/5
Vocals: 4.5/5
Creativity: 3.5/5
Overall: 4.5/5
Okay, so all of you go and buy it! I swear, there will be at least one song that touches your heart.
